Pot art: Agnus Varda
Agnus Varda collaborates with potatoes in “Patatupia” (2003), which was a three-screen film and approximately 1500 spuds at the French Pavilion. (seen again here in 2022 at Silent Green in Berlin)

“The Patatutopia project arose after the shooting of my documentary The Gleaners and I (Les Glaneurs et las Glaneuse). I had filmed a lot of potatoes and I had been lucky enough to come across some heart-shaped ones. I stored them in the cellar and outside. I kept them and looked at them. I was fascinated by how they changed, first dramatic aging then new sprouts and regrowth. I filmed them with great pleasure. They are splendid and they breathe.
I would like the people who enter to be overwhelmed with emotion and delight looking at this most ordinary and humble vegetable, the potato, and to share my utopia of believing that the beauty of the world embodied in the beauty of old potatoes helps us to live and reconciles us with chaos.” (Varda, 2003)
